Cornell University is working with other universities, Internet2, and EDUCAUSE on a series of pilot efforts to evaluate electronic textbooks. Initial efforts by Cornell, in cooperation with other universities participating in the Spring 2012 eText Pilot, have demonstrated the appeal of the new model and features of eTextbooks.

This fall, the pilot will expand to include at least 28 higher-education participants, from major research institutions to community colleges; the pilot aims to advance a new model for the purchase, distribution, and use of electronic textbooks and digital course materials.
